Privacy Policy

About this policy

Cornerstone Ministries (ABN: 41 369 806 767) respects your privacy. This policy explains how we collect, hold, use and share personal information when you visit our website at cornerstone-ministries.org, contact us, donate or subscribe to our updates.

We handle personal information in line with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). In this policy, ‘we’, ‘us’ and ‘our’ mean Cornerstone Ministries, PO Box 234, Bruthen VIC 3885.

‘Personal information’ means information or an opinion about you that identifies you, or could reasonably identify you.

What personal information we collect

We only collect what we reasonably need for our ministry. Depending on how you interact with us, this may include:

  • Contact details: your name, email address, phone number and postal address.
  • Donation details: the amount, date and frequency of your gift, and the details we need to send you a receipt. Your card details are entered directly with our payment provider, so we never see or store your full card number.
  • Messages you send us: enquiries through our contact form or by email, including prayer requests or questions about faith if you choose to share them.
  • Subscription details: your email address and preferences if you sign up for our newsletter or updates.
  • Technical information: your IP address, browser, device type, the pages you view and your approximate location (country or city), collected through cookies and similar tools.

How we collect it

Most of the information we hold comes directly from you, when you fill in a form on our website, donate, subscribe, email us, call us or write to us.

Some technical information is collected automatically through cookies and similar tools when you use our website (see Cookies, analytics and embedded content below).

Occasionally we receive information from others, such as our payment provider confirming your donation, or a social media platform when you message us there. If we receive personal information we didn't ask for and don't need, we will destroy or de-identify it where it is lawful and reasonable to do so.

Why we collect, hold and use it

We use your personal information to:

  • respond to your enquiries and prayer requests
  • process your donations, send receipts and keep the financial records the law requires
  • send you newsletters and ministry updates you have asked for
  • share our resources, such as blog posts, audio and video
  • understand how our website is used so we can improve it
  • protect our website and forms from spam, fraud and misuse
  • meet our legal obligations.

We won't use your information for an unrelated purpose unless you agree, or the law allows or requires it.

Sensitive information

Some things you may share with us, such as your religious beliefs, a prayer request, or details about your health or personal circumstances, are ‘sensitive information’ under the Privacy Act. These receive a higher level of protection.

We only collect sensitive information with your consent, which you give when you choose to share it with us, or where the law otherwise allows. We use it only for the reason you shared it, such as praying for you or answering your question. We will not share it outside our ministry team without your consent, unless the law requires it.

Please only share what you are comfortable sharing.

Donations and payments

Online donations are processed securely by [payment provider, e.g. Stripe or PayPal]. Your card details go directly to them and are handled under their own privacy policy and payment security standards.

We receive your name, contact details, the amount and date of your gift, and limited card information such as the card type. We use this to process and acknowledge your donation and to issue receipts.

We keep donation and financial records for as long as Australian tax and charity laws require, generally at least five years.

Who we share it with

We do not sell, rent or trade your personal information. We only share it where needed to run our ministry, with:

  • providers who host and maintain our website
  • our payment provider, to process donations
  • our email newsletter platform, to send updates you have asked for
  • security providers that help us protect our website
  • professional advisers such as accountants, auditors and lawyers
  • government bodies such as the ATO or ACNC, or law enforcement, where the law requires it.

Our service providers may only use your information to provide their services to us. We may also disclose information where it is needed to lessen or prevent a serious threat to someone's life, health or safety.

Information held overseas

Some of our service providers store or process information outside Australia, mainly in the United States. Where we disclose personal information overseas, we take reasonable steps to make sure it is handled consistently with the Australian Privacy Principles.

Cookies, analytics and embedded content

Cookies are small files stored on your device when you visit a website. We use them for two reasons:

  • Essential: to keep our website secure and protect our forms from spam (for example, Cloudflare). The website will not work properly without these.
  • Embedded content: videos and audio from other sites, such as YouTube, may set their own cookies when you play them. These are governed by those providers' privacy policies.

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. If you do, some parts of our website may not work as intended.

Email updates

We only send newsletters and ministry updates if you have subscribed or otherwise agreed to receive them, in line with the Spam Act 2003 (Cth).

Every email includes an unsubscribe link, or you can contact us to opt out. We will action your request within five working days. We never pass your details to other organisations for their own marketing.

Staying anonymous

You can browse our website without telling us who you are. Where practical, you can also contact us or donate without giving your name, or by using a different name. If we don't have your contact details, we may not be able to reply to you or send you a tax receipt.

Keeping your information safe

We take reasonable steps to protect your personal information from misuse, loss and unauthorised access. These include secure, encrypted (SSL) website hosting, spam protection on our forms, using reputable service providers, and limiting access to the people in our ministry who need it. No online service is completely secure, so we can't guarantee the security of information sent to us over the internet.

If a data breach is likely to cause serious harm to anyone, we will notify the people affected and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner as required under the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme.

We keep personal information only for as long as we need it, or as long as the law requires. After that, we securely destroy it or de-identify it.

Accessing and correcting your information

You can ask to see the personal information we hold about you, and ask us to correct it if it is inaccurate, out of date, incomplete, irrelevant or misleading. Contact us using the details below.

We will need to confirm your identity first, and we aim to respond within 30 days. There is no charge to make a request or to correct your information. If giving you access would involve significant cost, we may charge a reasonable fee, and we will tell you before going ahead.

If we can't give you access or make a correction, we will explain why in writing and tell you how to make a complaint.

Children and young people

Our website is for a general audience. If you are under 18, please check with a parent or guardian before sending us any personal information. If we find we have collected a child's information without appropriate consent, we will take reasonable steps to delete it.

Making a complaint

If you are concerned about how we have handled your personal information, please contact our Privacy Officer first using the details below, with as much detail as you can. We will acknowledge your complaint within [7] days and aim to resolve it within 30 days.

If you are not satisfied with our response, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC):

  • Website: www.oaic.gov.au
  • Phone: 1300 363 992
  • Post: GPO Box 5288, Sydney NSW 2001

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The current version will always be on this page, with the date it was last updated at the top. If we make a significant change, we will take reasonable steps to let you know.
